Announcements

  • Reg Francis, long-time and Honourary member of RCOS, died on June 14. From his obituary: In addition to his successful work and family life, Reg was also a dedicated member of the Ottawa Rotary Club for over 30 years. He served as Treasurer of the Ottawa South Rotary and was an active participant in their fundraising efforts. He was notably an integral contributor to the construction of Rotel, a non-profit motel in Ottawa that supports the families of patients receiving care at local hospitals, which has now served the community for over 35 years.
    - Friends and family may pay their respects at a Graveside Service on Friday, June 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Capital Memorial Gardens, reception to follow.
    - The club voted to make a $500 donation to Rotel Foundation Inc. in Reg's memory. The cheque was hand-delivered to Rotel later the same day, 'cause that's how Reg would've done it.

  • The D7040 Annual Changeover Event will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Smokie Ridge Vineyard & Brewery near Kemptville. To register go to the district website www.Rotary7040.com

  • Rotary Family and Friends Picnic and St. Lawrence Theatre Festival Performance - July 15: On Saturday, July 15, 2023 we'd love for you, your family and friends to join us at the beautiful RiverWalk Park in Prescott, Ontario for a zero-waste picnic followed by a performance at the St. Lawrence Shakespeare Theatre Festival (optional). Please let us know you will be joining us by completing our Family and Friends Picnic and St. Lawrence Theatre Festival Play Sign up Form before June 9, 2023. As of today, only one person has signed up for the event. If we do not have more people interested in the event, we will cancel the event.

End of Year Business Meeting

As this was the last business meeting for the club, several reports were given.

Golf Committee - Jonny Kung

The June 5 tournament was a great success. Players, volunteers, sponsors... everyone had a good time and many have said they look forward to next year. The final accounting is quite finished, but it seems clear that the event will net over $20,000. This is good news for both BGC Ottawa and RCOS. Jonny thanked all those who participated and helped to make the tournament shine. In turn, many thanks to Jonny, Chris and their committee.

Treasurer's Report - David Oliver

David has worked hard over the year with an accountant to get our "books" into shape. He provided an overview of the Club's financials and looks forward to clear sailing for the year ahead.

Community Services - Jeff Sirrs

Jeff reported that amidst much change over the past couple years (effects of COVID, many new members, new energies), the committee will continue to work Dictionaries 4 Life and the Salvation Army, resurrect the relationship with Banff Community House, start new ties with Bridges over Barriers and explore other opportunities to support our community.

Programming / Communications - Andre Errett

Andre reported that our club has convened for 14 events/speakers since Fall 2022, with plans for many more next year. He has been busy working with others and planning for a social media strategy, making use of free booth at Farmer Markets, and making use of a new Google not-for-profit account.

Membership Committee - Kateri Clark

Membership (as of June 15, 2023): 26 (22 Active and 4 Honorary)

In 2022 – 2023, the Membership Committee:

  • Held 3 Discover Rotary sessions
  • Welcomed 6 new members
  • Said farewell to 6 members
  • Organized the Rotary Friends and Family Picnic and Theatre Outing
  • Conducted the Annual membership satisfaction survey

Planned, but not executed:

  • Organize Member Recognition and Awards
  • Set up a Volunteer Ottawa membership and profile, explore networking opportunities, Chamber of Commerce events, entrepreneur hub networking events, organizations suggested by others

The Committee recommends that these two activities be a priority for membership in 2023-2024.

President Dave Gough thanked all and bestowed lovely Rotary-themed parting gifts to this year's Executive. (many of whom will be sticking around for terms next year, thankfully.)

Key Conclusions form the 2022-23 Membership Survey

Presented by Kateri Clark

In May 2023, Rotary Ottawa South conducted an online survey of current members. 15 of the 28 (54 percent) current members responded to the survey. The survey was based on the Membership Satisfaction tool produced by Rotary International.

Why are you a Rotarian?

  • 100 percent – service to others in my community and the world
  • 80 percent – friendship and fellowship
  • Having fun
  • Personal and professional development

Almost 75 percent of respondents were satisfied or very satisfied with their membership in Rotary Ottawa South. 25 percent of the respondents were neither satisfied or dissatisfied with their membership. None of the members expressed dissatisfaction.

When considering Rotary Ottawa South's culture, members, and meetings, respondents were most satisfied with these aspects:

  • We care about one another.
  • Meetings are a good use of time.
  • Educating members about Rotary and what’s new at Rotary.

Respondents were least satisfied with these aspects:

  • Doing a good job of involving new members
  • Reflecting the demographic profile of our community

Most respondents were satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the meeting locations (hybrid and virtual) and length of meetings. A majority of respondents really liked the Rotell and updates of meetings as well as the sharing of Rotary International and District information. One thing that might be improved is the level of professional connections and networking done in meetings.

When asked about service projects, 57 percent of respondents thought the number of service projects was just right. Although 29 percent thought there were too few service projects. Noteworthy is that 50 percent of respondents thought our club was doing just the right number of international projects but 15 percent thought there were too many international projects and 36 percent of respondents thought our club was doing too few. The respondents were fairly evenly split on whether we are doing just the right number or too few vocational or new generation service activities. The majority of respondents thought we were doing just the right amount of environmental projects. A majority of respondents also seemed satisfied with the quality of projects (impact, organization, etc.).

When asked about fundraisers, many of the members felt we had just the right number and variety of fundraisers. There was 40 percent of respondents that did not share this opinion. Most members also felt like they had enough opportunities to actively participate in fundraising. There were also mixed results when it came to rating the quality of our fundraisers, some respondents felt that we could be more effective in our fundraising efforts.

When asked about communication and responsiveness, respondents agreed that Rotary Ottawa South does a good job communicating to members but could do a better job of listening to members and acting on those ideas.

The things valued most my respondents about their membership are that:

  • They feel welcomed by other club members
  • They have opportunities to share and use their talents and skills
  • They felt they were making a difference through Rotary

Overall, respondents felt that their membership was worth their time and money. However, there is room for improvement here and in getting members more involved and engaged.

Most respondents felt proud of the Club but were not as comfortable inviting people (family and friends) to participate in the activities of Rotary Ottawa South. One respondent commented that, “It would be nice to create more of a trusted "family" experience within the club. For example, reaching out individually to another member when aware they have a particular celebration, success, challenge, etc.”

Understanding why that is and what would make them more comfortable doing so is something that the membership committee will need to consider in its activities.

12 respondents thought the Annual fees were just right and 1 respondents thought that the fees were too high. Additionally, a majority of respondents thought that requests for donations to Rotary Ottawa South or RI Foundation were just right or too low.
