Speaker
Ken Sparks from the Bytown Club spoke to us about the Guatemala Stove Project (GSP)

The GSP is a volunteer- run registered Canadian charity. It began in 1999 by Tom Clark, a carpenter from Perth, ON who saw a need for the stoves. In the first year he built six stoves and to date 6817 stoves have been built.

Breathing in toxic fumes, while cooking, puts women and children at risk for respiratory illnesses, blindness and burns on a daily basis. It is estimated that 77% of Guatemalan families use wood as their main fuel source and 2% of Guatemala’s forest are lost yearly. Precious family resources and time are spent on gathering or purchasing wood.

The GSP helps alleviate these problems by having a stove that is properly ventilated. The design of the stove is safe for the family and it takes the poisonous smoke out of the house. It also reduces wood consumption by about 50%.

The motto of GSP is ‘Build a stove, change the future’.

We thank Ken for his efforts in this worthwhile project and for presenting to us today.
