Silver EnviroClub Award
We did it again! Super proud! We achieved a Silver EnviroClub Award again in 2023-24. We are committed to supporting activities that strengthen the conservation and protection of natural resources, advance ecological sustainability, and foster harmony between communities and the environment. We empower communities to access grants and other resources, embrace local solutions, and spur innovation in an effort to address the causes and reduce the effects of climate change and environmental degradation.
Cleaning up the Capital - Ottawa Rotary Home Edition
For many years, as part of Ottawa's "Clean Up the Capital" initiative, the Rotary Club Ottawa South has picked up trash around the Ottawa Rotary Home. It's an act of environmental stewardship, being a good neighbour, and camaraderie. RCOS members really enjoy the opportunity to chat and catch up on a Saturday morning. As we fill our bags with fast food litter, cigarette butts (now joined by vape juice cannisters), forgotten realtor road signs, and the occasional car part, we also fill our need to connect and share. In addition to being good for urban environment, it's also good for our soul!
The Bank Street and Rotary Way corner was relatively busy with people running weekend errands, and we received a couple shouts of encouragement and thanks from passersby. The weather was pleasant, the company was terrific and Sherri, aided by her experience and the Merlin birding app, reported that we were serenaded by the following birds:
Robins, Chipping Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Goldfinches, House Finches, Sea Gulls, Killdeer, Canada Gooses - of course!
This year, our pick up date was Saturday, May 4, which coincided with Rotary's District Conference so fewer members were able to help out. Many thanks to Sherri, Bill, Rosemary and Scott for pitching in and picking up.
Dim the Lights!
Dimming the lights at night at your home is a crucial step in safeguarding migratory birds. Every year, billions of birds embark on their journey north in spring and south in fall, often flying during the night. However, as they pass over populated areas, artificial lights can disorient them, leading to detours, energy depletion, and collisions with buildings or windows. Do your part and DIM THE LIGHTS!
NO MOW MAY!
The goal of "No Mow May" is to pause mowing lawns during May to allow flowering plants to help provide food for pollinators. Early spring is a time where floral resources are often limited for pollinators, especially in urban and suburban landscapes. Again, let's do our part and allow the pollinators to do their job!

Rotary Club of Cornwall Annual Rose Campaign

Rotary Ottawa South takes a field trip to Lionhearts in Stittsville.
Lionhearts Inc. is a food rescue organization dedicated to seeing all people live with human dignity.
We were given a presentation on the history of Lionhearts by Pastor Rob and Chef Stephen. Following the presentation we were able to sort goods and get a feel for the daily activity that happens in the warehouse. It is impressive how they work with other organizations and partners to deliver food and other items to people in need in the Ottawa and Kingston regions. Please visit their website to learn more about this amazing company:
GOLF, GOLF, GOLF!!!
Please put on a push for foursomes – the most fun anyone is going to have on a
golf course this summer!
Auction items: keep Julie apprised as to who you are approaching, and what you’ve secured.
All members are asked to bring a bottle of wine to add to a gift basket that Rosemary will put together for the silent auction. Thank you!
This year, we offer the best value and most fun of any golf tournament in the area – tell your friends and help sell foursomes and sponsorships!
Chris would like an update at every golf meeting from members who have been assigned specific tasks - please come prepared. Next meeting is Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at 6:30 pm at The Meadows Golf Club, 4335 Hawthorne Road.
All Ottawa South Rotary Members are encouraged to volunteer at our tournament on Tuesday, June 4th at The Meadows Golf Club, 4335 Hawthorne Road.
