Announcements

  • Kateri updated us on the recent District Training session:
On Thursday, February 17, four members of Ottawa South Rotary attended a District Training Assembly focused on Membership. Doug Logan and Lise Dutrisec, facilitators with our Zone, talked to us about some valuable tools for growing our club. Doug told us about a new algorithm that helps clubs to identify their specific attraction, attrition and growth rates. Rotary Ottawa South will be given their data from this algorithm this spring at President Elect Training. Lise told us about a study of the top growing clubs in North America and the top five common attributes of these most successful clubs with membership growth. Namely:
    1. Strong leadership - it's about we not me
    2. Clear membership goals and a growth plan
    3. Active in the community (service projects)
    4. Visible in the community (doing service and then telling others about it however you can)
    5. Active and intentional member engagement (member participation, starting a new club, reaching out to partners and others in your community)
  • Julie informed us that RCOS is interviewing a prospect for the RI Global Grant Scholarship. Caitlin Grady seems like an exceptional candidate, and with Julie's assistance should fair well. Freddie and Bruce will assist with the interview and process.
  • Sherri told us that the Environment Committee has submitted a grant application to the Federal gov'ts 2 Billion Trees program. They plan on partnering with Tree Canada to plant trees in Ottawa this fall and next spring. Stay tuned, volunteer planters will be required.
  • Scott brought everyone up to speed re DisCon 22. May 5, 6, 7 is approaching quickly. The event will by hybrid, mainly online, and a major Watch Party happening here in Ottawa on Saturday May 7. (includes a continental breakfast, live presentation by Dr. Vera Etches, lunch, afternoon live session, and dinner!  Register quickly before space runs out.

Happy Bucks

Too busy for happiness today, save it for a rainy day.

Community Coffee Opportunity
Dave and Scott gave a quick rendition of the Community Blend Coffee Opportunity that they are starting to share with local Rotary Clubs.

There is a lot of excitement about the program and we're hoping that it turns out to be a good fundraiser for RCOS and other clubs. It is an opportunity for more than raising funds, we look forward to promote community service and doing good for society.

Start making a list, soon we'll be selling premium coffee beans. Friends, co-workers, neighbours, random strangers in the grocery store parking lot... coffee drinkers are everywhere.
Jeanine's Enviro Tip
5 reasons to Ditch Your Dryer
1. 81% of Canadian households have dryers.
Your dryer is the 3rd most energy hungry appliance in your house.
2. The lint in your dryer - ya know, that stuff that  you collect when you run your hand across the dryer screen - is evidence of your clothing literally wearing away.
In many countries, drying clothes on a line or a rack is the norm.
3. Ok, you would not want to be hanging clothing out to dry during an Ottawa winter - use a rack in your basement, or a spare room.
4. Air drying  your clothes can reduce the average household's carbon footprint by 2400 pounds per year - a whooping amount.
5. There are any number of municipalities and developments across the country that have anti-clothesline by laws.  In 2010, Nova Scotia actually passed an act to PREVENT any prohibition of the use of clotheslines anywhere.

Think about your dryer use - or better yet, don't use a dryer. Period.

Don't miss our next meeting, in-person at KS on the Keys and via Zoom. Click the button below next Wednesday at 12:20 PM.
