Helping Kids Get Ready for School

For many years, RCOS has been raising funds and buying school bags and school supplies for young students. The bags and supplies are distributed to families in our community by the Salvation Amy and the Banff Avenue Community House.

This year is a novel scenario, as students prepare to go back to school after a lengthy stay at home. It was also unique as shipments for all retailers are quite low and they have very limited supply. Nonetheless, Staples not only provided us with the supplies we needed, they extended special pricing to help our budget stretch a little further.

Thanks to our club, and Rosemary Parker for leading the program and working hard to secure supplies, at least 100 students will be well equipped s they venture school this year.
Sylvie Manser of the Banff Avenue Community House.

Getting to Know David Oliver

David has been a Rotarian for many years, and a member of our club for well over year, so it was nigh time that we learned a little more about him.

David, the eldest of five children grew up in Montreal, reasonably comfortably in Wesstmount it must be reported. However, after considering science as a career, David eschewed any dreams of a bourgeois life and choose the path of a clergyman. Talk about service above self.

As an Anglican minister, David worked for many years in Montreal as well as in Newfoundland, exploring every bay, inlet, nook and cranny while he was there. David then spent many years travelling the globe with the Bible Society, including: Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Romania, Hungary, Africa, Moscow.

David has also been on missions to the Arctic, Cree country, Bangalore and Africa, including a Rotary water project in Guyana, and a water project in Rorya, Tanzania pictured below. The expedition experience seems core to David's soul, one reason he chose McGill to earn his MBA is that it included a sabbatical in India!

Now, retired, David still ministers to a small parish in Gatineau. Christine, his wife, is a librarian at Université d'Ottawa. She is obviously a bit of an adventurer herself, as they have been together for 54 years!

Students in Rorya, Tanzania had voted that clean water to replace water taken from river where the cows waded was a priority.
This 5000 litre water collection system was built at Rorya Theological College. The students kept the base covered in wet sand for four days as it cured to ensure it would be solid and stable.

Members of the Rotary Club of Ottawa South enjoy getting to know David Oliver as he recounts stories from his years abroad and across Canada as a clergyman.
