The Rotary Club of Ottawa South (RCOS) has been awarding bursaries to graduating high school students for many years. The bursaries are for $500each and help to defray a bit of the cost of post-secondary education. The criteria for the bursaries are decided by each school involved. All are based on academic achievement, and may also involve athletic, music, leadership, extra-curricular or volunteering activities. The bursaries are awarded to six area high schools as well as the Banff Community House. At our June 12, 2019, lunch meeting at KS on the Keys, the high school students were invited to receive their awards. Every year, we are amazed at the abilities, determination and drive of the chosen students, and this year was no exception! Five of the six high school students were able to make it to lunch, and all had a parent or two in tow as well as a school representative. It was very enjoyable to get to chat with our guests and get to know them better over lunch. The students all presented themselves with great confidence and told us a little about their high school years and what they were going on to study at university or college. A very impressive group of youth who have already shown great ability, their care for others and focusing on their passion. The recipients this year are: Brookfield HS - Melveen Rashid Hillcrest HS - Claire McGurrin Ridgemont HS - Thomas Pilcher St. Francis Xavier HS - Sarah Ramsey St. Joseph HS - Alexandra McLean St. Patrick's HS - Kiara Grant Kudos to the bursary recipients, we wish them well and feel confident of Canada's future with such leadership on its way!
