Mike Bugyra, viiting Rotarian from Kemptville RC. Older members remember Mike as a RCOS member from the 80's. Great to see you again Mike!

 

Ian asked for interested members to join Monique and him at the Harvest Moon Extravaganza at Wabano on Tuesday October 27, 5:30- 8:30pm. The event includes contemporary indigenous cuisine, aboriginal art and entertainment, a silent auction, and an exclusive Holiday Market. Tickets $85 in advance or $95 at the door. Contact Monique or Ian if you want to attend.

Julia said that the Dominica Relief campaign had raised more than $5000 to date. She asked for support for the event on October 23. For details, contact Julia.

 

A motion to donate $5000 to each of the Queensway Carleton Hospital and the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health was duly presented and passed with the required 2/3 majority. The cheque presentations will be made at the November 4 RCOS meeting.

 

Joan was presented with  a cheque for $824, for winning at last week's meeting. Coincidentally, she was going to get a new car after the meeting. Just shows how the proceeds of gambling can go to the head!

Started a new, but reduced, deck at this meeting. Alex drew 6 of diamonds.

 

Sam conducted Happy Bucks and it seems that even members who didn’t win $850 were happy (but probably not as much as Joan!)

 

Our speaker, a return from last year, was Marlene Quinton of DeafBlind Ontario Services. She is the coordinator for Eastern Ontario. There are 7000 deaf/blind people in Ontario and are made up of congenital and acquired. DeafBlind Ontario services on congenital cases and provides residential and community support together with the use of "intervenors", who are one-on-one workers with the clients. Communication is often by touch giving the tag line - Enriching lives one touch at a time. There is a residential facility on Hinton Avenue and another in Embrun. There are 60 clients in Ontario and the annual operating budget is $11+ million. 93% of that is funded by the Ministry of Community and Social Services, the rest by fundraising. They are currently looking for funds for accessibility and upgrade, enhanced equipment, and lighting.
