David's Rotary Moment

A Prayer for Ukrainians from David Oliver

Yesterday, we heard a President ask our Members of Parliament to imagine, to feel, the fear that is upon the hearts and minds of every Ukrainian parent.

Guide us, who are gathered to contemplate work with our youth in Ottawa, to consider how essential peace and security are for all our plans.

Open our eyes and hearts as we now pray for peace for the people of Ukraine. Help us as Canadians and our government to have the wisdom to find and build peace.

Amen

RCOS Partners with Ottawa Boys and Girls Club Ottawa
RCOS is thrilled to be working with  the Ottawa Boys and Girls Club (BGC Ottawa), the main beneficiary of our upcoming golf tournament. Most everyone is familiar with the Ottawa Boys and Girls Club as an active and impactful member of our community for many decades.

We were joined by several members of BGC Ottawa; Adam Joiner, CEO, Jessie-Lee Wallace, Director, Major Gifts & Communications,  and Anne Premachuck, Advancement Officer.

Adam gave an impassioned talk about what BGC Ottawa has meant to him - it was a second home for him. He started going their at age 9 and working their at twelve... he neve really left! (Fun fact: Adam worked at Rotel for two years and remembers it fondly.)

Adam spoke of the common ground between BGC Ottawa and Rotary: working with youth, those who are vulnerable, diversity, and creating stronger community.

Currently they welcome over 5,000 kids annually, and they aim to double that by 2024. They have four club houses and serve 19 neighbourhoods. Although it involves a lot of sports, programming and good nutrition, their primary goal is building character and foster respect for oneself, others and the community. (Another fun fact; 80% of their staff grew up using BGC services.)
