Announcements
  • Mahamud reported that Community Services should be able to increase the Giant Tiger gift card donation to 100 families.
  • Jeanine updated us on two important dates coming up:

    19 Nov 2020 – World Toilet Day

World Toilet Day is a United Nations Observance that celebrates toilets and raises awareness of the 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation. It is about taking action to tackle the global sanitation crisis.

    20 Nov 2020 – International Children’s Day

It promotes international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare.

Socks for the Homeless. Joan presented us with an idea that she and Dave are discussing to give socks to the homeless. There will be more information to follow as Dave works out the details with the Community Services Committee. Scott has created an email for e-transfer payments: payment@rotaryottawasouth.ca. Once we confirm that it operates as intended Joan will get in touch with Jonny to have the bank finalize the arrangements.

Guest Speaker

District Governor Hadi Mortada

Some interesting background on our DG:

  • Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon.
  • Completed a diploma in Electronics Technology at the Beirut Technical College. In 1985 moved to the United States where he completed English studies and pre-engineering at the University of Georgia. In 1986 moved to Colorado where he completed Electronics Engineering Technology at the University of Southern Colorado. Hadi is also a Microsoft Certified Professional MCP (1998).
  • In late 1989 Hadi moved to Canada and completed Sales & Marketing Certificates at Algonquin College. At the same time, he was part of a team that started a daily newspaper in Ottawa, "The Ottawa Sun" where he worked with the company for 27 years.
  • Hadi has been involved with Rotary since 2003.

Some points Hadi shared with us today:

  • As rotary meetings get back to in-person meetings we should keep the online format. It’s a way for us to reach more people and to accommodate the members we already have.
  • As a club, we need to be more visible on social media. Bill Kelly offered to update our Facebook page which will improve our social media profile.
  • The environment is a big area of focus for Rotary. He challenged our club to clean up a park or area in Ottawa on Earth Day, 22 April 2021.
  • Membership recruitment and retention was a hot topic. Hadi says we should all take on the role of recruiting members. Gary and Joan both spoke about recognizing our long-standing members more frequently as they are the backbone of our clubs. There was also discussion on how friends of our club assist us with our fundraising events.
  • Work with other organizations in the community.
  • Have fun!

We appreciated having Hadi join us for our meeting today. On 02 December Hadi would like to join us for our meeting in the park, so you should be there too!

Next week: Julia Ginley will be our guest speaker.
