Rotary Thought

David Oliver: Environmental issues are a big concern for our club. As Rotarians we have an obligation to help make our world a safer and healthier place. We are reminded to open our eyes, our hearts and get off our behinds and do something!

  • Golf Update: Our golf tournament has been postponed due to the damage the Hunt Club Golf Course sustained during the recent storm. The new date for the tournament is scheduled for September 26th, 2022. We have an opportunity to make this a very successful event and to raise more funds for the Ottawa Boys and Girls Club. Continue to sell foursomes, tee signs and collect prizes!!

  • Happy Bucks: It was wonderful to hear lots of happy stories shared by the members.

Bronze for RCOS - Environmental Sustainability Commitment Award from the District

At the District Convention in Ottawa on May 1 and 14, 2022, Rotarians from Ottawa South were acknowledged for their commitment to the environment - one of only 10 clubs in District 7040.

This is what the club did to earn this award:
  • We developed an Environment Committee with several members and appointed a chair
  • We devoted at least two club meetings to an Environmental Sustainability theme - remember the presentations about environmentally friendly businesses and the City of Ottawa's support for same? Climate change? Electric cars? COP 26?
  • We participated in at least 2 environmental initiatives - that would be the series of Environment Minutes at our meetings (which included tips on what we can do to work towards a cleaner world), the annual cleanup project around Rotel and education on cookstove initiatives in the global south.
  • Environment Committee members initiated a project with an environmental sustainability component or focus  by applying for grant funding to plant trees in Ottawa a little later this year.
The certificate itself is worth having a look at.  The clever, artistic logo was designed by a Rotarian and is available in an email/letter friendly form.  We continue to strive for a cleaner, sustainable environment.  After all, our kids and grandkids deserve this!

The Community Blend coffee website is live; share the link, share the love, sell the coffee.

Next week is live at KS on the Keys and via Zoom: Wednesday, June 8 @ 12:30 pm.
