High School Bursary Awards

It's always one of the best meetings of the year. Meeting the the graduating students and hearing their speeches is both inspiring and humbling. These youth have demonstrated an ability to apply themselves to their schoolwork and succeed, as they also exemplify Rotarian ideals, such as Service Above Self.

Many of this year's recipients have dealt with more than their share of obstacles and hardships. They've managed to rise above and in the process bettered themselves, their families, friends and communities. Many a tear was evident during the speeches as the students' stories were often overwhelming; filling the audience with appreciation, admiration and even a greater sense of hope for Canada's future youth like this leading the way. In addition to the remarkable speeches, it was a pleasure to talk with the students and their parents or teachers over lunch.

The Rotary Club Ottawa South has been awarding bursaries to graduating high school students for over 20 years. The students each receive a certificate, RCOS mug and $500 cheque to assist with their post-secondary education expenses. The recipients are chosen by each high school administration based on academic performance, school involvement and community-minded activities.
